If you had the opportunity to read my CV you would see that I have been officiating at funerals for the past 21 years and have great experience of dealing with families and individuals in grief. I have also worked in the funeral industry as a funeral arranger, assistant, driver and bearer. My career in the Police Service gave me experience of dealing with HM Coroner’s Office, sudden and unexpected death, the deaths of children and young people and contact with families in extremely traumatic situations.
I know that, as funeral arrangers you need to have access to celebrants who will be available to take on funerals in a consistent and regular way. I know you would rather speak to a person than a voicemail system! The majority of my years as a funeral celebrant have been as a result of my church roles and connections. Having retired from those roles I would like to offer my services to you as an Independent Celebrant, happy to arrange life celebrations and services from a religious perspective or a non-religious one. I know that many families would like to have a mixture of both in their service. Clearly, I cannot officiate at a church funeral where you will need to contact the minister in charge.
Through my experience of working in busy urban and suburban cities and towns the majority of funerals I’ve been involved with have been at the local Crematorium and occasionally Cemetery burials. I therefore know the importance of designing a service or celebration that will fit into the time allotted without the unnecessary stress on other families and funeral directors caused by going over time.
It is vitally important that the service or celebration reflects the wishes of the family and is of a very high quality. This is important pastorally for the families involved, also for your business as the service you offer to clients will be of an equally high standard. Excellent Customer Service from me is vital for both the family and you as my clients.
I hope you feel that you can use me to support your business in this way. I believe I charge very reasonable fees which I am happy to discuss on an individual basis.
I am sorry for the delay following up Part 1 but holidays have called! There is a fantastic example of Change – a change is as good as a rest – so they say!
Change! Change for me started at the very beginning of my life journey. I was three months old when my Mum left the shores of this country, babe in arms, for me to meet my Dad who was working abroad at the time. The boffins on Change will be able to tell you whether or not this would have an effect on one so young but all I can say is that the experience is something that has journeyed with me for the past 59 years, although I don’t remember the actual events. In fact, there was a lot of travelling in those days. I had thousands of miles in my BOAC Junior Jet Club Book – if anyone can remember those – before I was 5 years old!
Bearing in mind how the story unfolded; family break-up, boarding school and more (that will feature in further parts of the story) – I look back to what I have heard about that time with a positive mind-set. With absolutely nothing I can do to change all of this, to wind back the clock or start again, it has become a good lesson in how to use my story in every-day life.
So, what I say is; I am well-travelled! I have wide cultural experience! I have met many people from a variety of backgrounds, creeds and countries. This gives for an expansive outlook on life. It helps with empathy and the ability to listen to others without jumping to pre-conceived ideas or judgments. It has been a fantastic help in realising my dreams and in decisions that have led to career choices (the two things not being mutually exclusive, of course).
As I have said before, I am not commenting on the science behind the points I make on this Blog. I am just recounting some of the changes I have experienced and how they bring me to where I am today.
We all have dreams; we all have desires and guess what? All of them are achievable if we follow them and if we work hard challenging ourselves to achieve them. A great way of understanding this is to read biographies of people who have achieved against the odds; people who have followed their dreams and made them work. On the other hand, get yourself a Life Coach! What is that…? I hear you ask – more next time!
Change is a huge thing but here’s a thing, it’s been happening for ever and will continue to happen whatever we feel about it. Please don’t stop reading now on account of a guy stating the blooming obvious. Despite the fact that it’s been around a long time and it’s something we have to get used to in order to survive, change is something that we are fearful of.
There are two types of change that we need to face up to. Change that we choose ourselves and change that is thrust upon us by others or by circumstances. Easy to recognise; a decision to move house; to begin a relationship; to get married; to leave a job (which category?); cope with a life threatening or life changing accident or illness.
Now, this BLOG is not an academic study on change nor is it an attempt to iron out all the issues that come with change. What I hope will come across is some stories of change that have happened to an ordinary bloke who simply wants to help people cope with the things that happen in their lives. Therefore the writing style may not be the best, grammar may be lacking (if that’s a thing) and there may be the odd occasion when I put an apostrophe in the wrong place’s (apologies in advance to grammar and spelling snobs).
Why have I put this on LinkedIn? Well, because these stories will be common to all. Whether you are a CEO, MD, ST ( Sole Trader not saint, although saints are also subject to change!!), employee or trainee. Stories of Joys, Achievement, Struggles and perceived failures ( I say ‘perceived’ because I don’t like the word failure, I prefer Changed Opportunity).
Now, just to let y’all know that my situation is subject to loads of change at the moment. Having been an employee for nearly 45 years, (yes I started early!) I am launching out on my own as an Independent Celebrant and Life Coach. August will be taken up with Training and developing the business with September being the launch month. I tell you this for your information and supportive comments. Also so that you can forgive me if there is a BLOG delay. I hope to publish stories on a weekly basis but, as I hope you will appreciate there may be some hold ups.
